vitrectomy surgery

A vitrectomy is a surgical procedure that requires the removal of the vitreous matter, or the humor in the eye pits. Quite often, this becomes necessary especially when the vitreous turns cloudy, blood-filled or pulls at the retina resulting to vision problems. The surgeon goes on to remove the vitreous humor so that they can have a clear view of the retina which is a layer sensitive to light at the back of the eye responsible for turning light rays into electrical impulses sent to the brain.

Vitrectomy is commonly conducted for several eye conditions such as retinal detachment, macular holes, diabetic retinopathy and severe eye infections. After undertaking vitreous excision, there are certain necessary repair works on the retina which can be done like sealing on its tears or flattening those parts where it is away from its original position. Depending on what has been treated, saline solution, gas bubble or silicone oil may be put inside to replace that part of the eye that has been filled with liquid.

Recovery from vitrectomy varies based on procedure undertaken as well as one’s general eye health status. If you are considering vitrectomy it is important to have discussions about surgery intention with ophthalmologists, what to expect after surgery and risks and benefits that come with these procedures in relation to your individual situation.
