Uterine Prolapse

Uterine prolapse is caused by stretching and weakening of the pelvic Floor muscles and ligaments, which cause the uterus to descend into or even out from the vagina. This condition usually occurs to those who are postmenopausal, especially those that have had one or more deliveries through vagina. Uterine prolapse comes in varying degrees ranging from mild cases which may have few symptoms to severe ones causing much discomfort and interfering with daily routines.

When it comes to mild uterine prolapse, treatment may not be needed, but lifestyle changes such as pelvic floor exercises can help manage symptoms. However, more aggressive treatment may be necessary if uterine prolapse brings about some discomforts, pressure or difficulties urinating and passing stool. Treatment options for uterine prolapse include vaginal pessaries which are devices that go into the vagina aimed at supporting the uterus or surgery that repairs the pelvic floor as well as repositioning the uterus.

You should see your health care provider if you have uterine prolapse symptoms that impact on your quality of life since they would offer you recommendations on what is right for you based on the degree of your prolapse, your general health status, and any future plans for having children. Addressing this condition earlier can ease symptoms and prevent its worsening
