Uterine artery embolization (UAE)
Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is a procedure that is minimally invasive and used primarily to treat excessive vaginal bleeding caused by uterine fibroids, which are noncancerous tumors that develop in the uterus. The procedure can also be effective in managing heavy bleeding due to other conditions such as trauma, malignant gynecological tumors or postpartum hemorrhage.
During UAE a radiologist inserts a catheter into the uterine arteries through a small incision which is usually done at the groin area. Tiny particles are then injected through the catheter to block blood flow to the fibroids or other bleeding sources. This will reduce their size thus alleviating symptoms by starving them of oxygen and nutrients they need for growth.
It is important to stress that while uterine artery embolization (UAE) and uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) may be used interchangeably; they have some slight variations. UFE particularly focuses on uterine fibroids while UAE can deal with many causes of abnormal uterine bleeding including fibroids.
If you are considering UAE, it is essential to discuss the procedure with your healthcare provider in terms of its potential benefits, risks and how it fits into your overall health goals. For many patients, UAE presents a less invasive alternative to surgery that has shorter recovery periods.
