Prostate surgery through the urethral section (TURP)
Prostate surgery through the urethral section (TURP), is a procedure that is preferred for treating urinary problems associated with enlarged prostates referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Such conditions can result in symptoms such as difficulty in urination initiation; low urine stream; too many urinations or feeling of incomplete bladder emptying.
During TURP, the doctor uses an instrument known as a resectoscope which is introduced via penis head and passed through the urethra. This enables him/her to examine inside the urethra and extract extra prostate tissue causing hindrance to urine flow. Therefore, this operation alleviates urinary symptoms by removing the blockage.
Generally, TURP is regarded as an effective remedy for men suffering from moderate or severe urinary symptoms that have not improved with medicine. Good outcome rates characterize this procedure and most patients report marked improvement of their symptoms. Nonetheless, just like any other surgery, TURP has its share of risks including bleeding, infections sometimes leading to impotence in rare cases. It’s essential that you discuss the possible benefits and risks with your doctor on whether TURP fits you well
