Tonsillectomy

Tonsillectomy is a type of surgery in which the tonsils are removed. The tonsils are two oval-shaped fleshes located at the back of the throat. This procedure is mainly recommended for individuals who have experienced frequent or severe tonsillitis that did not respond to any other treatment method or those who are suffering from sleep-disordered breathing like obstructive sleep apnea due to enlarged tonsils.

Modern tonsillectomy techniques have evolved with an aim of taking care of the patient, reducing recovery time, and minimizing pain. Although the traditional cold knife methods (steel) dissection method still exists, newer methods such as electrocautery involve heating the tissues to be removed together with blood vessels as in case of coblation where radiofrequency energy and saline are used to get rid of tissues at lower temperatures. These techniques reduce bleeding and lead to less postoperative discomforts.

Moreover, there has been a recent trend towards robotic-assisted tonsillectomy especially among adults with complicated anatomy or when precision really matters. In addition, several centers are investigating laser tonsillectomy that removes tissues precisely with minimal injury to surrounding tissue.

It usually takes one to two weeks for recovery from a tonsillectomy, focusing on keeping hydrated and controlling pain. If you decide to have surgery for a tonsillectomy, consider having a discussion with your doctor about the current approaches and choices that can be considered in order for you to achieve the desired results in your particular condition.
