Thyroidectomy
A surgical procedure that entails the complete or partial elimination of the thyroid gland, which is a butterfly-shaped organ situated at the front of the neck, is called thyroïdectomie. The thyroid gland plays an essential role in regulating metabolism, thus affecting all aspects of life from heart rate to calorie burning. There are various reasons why thyroïdectomie may be advised including presence of thyroid nodules, goiter (enlargement of the thyroid), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) or thyroid cancer.

Traditional thyroidectomy is usually through an incision made on the front side of neck allowing access and making possible removal of this gland. Smaller incisions that may go unnoticed e.g. underarm or behind ear are utilized hence leading to lesser scarring making mending quicker.
Furthermore, intraoperative nerve monitoring during thyroidectomies helps protect vocal cords helping reduce voice changes after surgery – one of its possible risks. Patients who undergo different degrees of removal would be required to take thyroid hormone pills throughout their lives so as to keep the metabolism normal.
