Radiation therapy
Radiation therapy, commonly known as radiotherapy, is a treatment option for cancer that involves using high-energy beams to destroy cancer cells. The most frequently used type of radiation therapy utilizes X-rays, but other forms, like proton therapy, are also available. The procedure can be administered externally or internally, with the external beam being the most common approach.
In external beam radiation therapy, a device called a linear accelerator is used to precisely target the cancerous area. This machine delivers powerful energy beams directly to the tumor, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The treatment is usually painless and is delivered over several sessions, allowing the cancer cells to be gradually destroyed while giving healthy cells time to recover.
For patients, the process involves lying still while the machine moves around the body to deliver radiation from different angles. Side effects may include fatigue, skin irritation, or other localized symptoms depending on the treated area.
