Pyeloplasty

Pyeloplasty, which is a condition that results when urine fails to flow properly from the kidney into the bladder because of a blockage. Renal pelvis (a funnel-shaped area that collects urine) and ureter (the tube through which urine passes from the kidneys to the bladder) meet at this region. The urine may build up into the kidney due to its backflow through this junction, resulting in pains and infections as well as irreversible damage.

During pyeloplasty, the surgeon removes the blocked part of the ureter so they can reattach normal sections back together again to allow normal passage of urine. Most often it is done using minimally invasive surgery methods such as laparoscopic or robotic-assisted surgical procedures which lessens recovery time and scaring area size.

Pyeloplasties have been shown to be effective long-term solutions for UPJ obstructions significantly improving renal function with no risk of complications later on. Discomfort may follow after surgery but most patients would have resumed their daily chores by then few weeks’ time. A patient who intends to undergo a pyeloplasty must have a conversation with their doctor about its benefits, risks, and anticipated outcomes; this will help them find out whether this operation is suitable for their management plan or not.
