Proton Therapy

Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation therapy that uses protons—positively charged particles—to treat cancer and some noncancerous tumors. Unlike traditional radiation therapy, which uses X-rays, proton therapy allows for more precise targeting of tumors. This precision enables doctors to deliver high doses of radiation directly to the tumor while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

Proton therapy has shown significant promise in treating various types of cancer, including brain tumors, prostate cancer, and pediatric cancers, where protecting healthy tissue is particularly critical. One of the key advantages of proton therapy is its potential to reduce side effects compared to conventional radiation. This is because proton beams can be controlled more accurately, reducing radiation exposure to nearby organs and tissues.

However, it’s important to note that while proton therapy is a promising option, research comparing its effectiveness to traditional X-ray radiation therapy is still ongoing. Some studies suggest that proton therapy may lead to fewer long-term side effects, but more evidence is needed to determine if it is more effective at extending patients’ lives.
