Pleurodesis

Pleurodesis is a medical procedure whose aim is to eliminate the pleural space which is the fluid-filled area between the two layers of pleura surrounding lungs. The main cause for this procedure to be performed is to prevent re-occurrence of pleural effusion (excess fluid accumulating around the lungs) or pneumothorax (collapsed lung), especially in situations where these conditions are recurrent or chronic. This technique can also be used in treating pneumothorax that fails to resolve spontaneously.

During pleurodesis, an irritant is introduced into the pleura through either a chemical agent such as talc, doxycycline or bleomycin or mechanically thereby causing inflammation and adhesion between both layers. By doing this, it obliterates the pleural space hence preventing accumulation of air and even fluid. This procedure could either be performed using chest tube (bedside pleurodesis) or during thoracoscopy which provides direct visibility into the pleural cavity.

Recent advances in pleurodesis include video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), a minimally invasive technique that allows for more accurate administration of the sclerosing agent and better management of the entire process. Compared to standard open surgery, VATS pleurodesis results in less discomfort, faster recovery time and shorter hospital stays.

If one is thinking about pleurodesis, then he/she must have a dialogue with their doctor on why this procedure is needed, what particular technique will be employed in the process and how recovery will be like afterwards. When you know the advantages and possible dangers involved, then choosing what approach to take regarding your therapy becomes easier.
