Mitral valve repair

Mitral valve repair and mitral valve replacement are surgical options for treating a damaged mitral valve, a crucial component in the heart’s blood flow system. If you’re considering these procedures, understanding the differences and what they involve can guide your decision.

Understanding the Mitral Valve

The mitral valve regulates blood flow between the left atrium and left ventricle of your heart. When it’s not functioning properly, blood can either leak backward (mitral regurgitation) or be obstructed (mitral stenosis). Both conditions can lead to serious heart issues if left untreated.

Mitral Valve Repair involves fixing your existing valve. Surgeons may reshape or reinforce the valve using various techniques, preserving its natural function. Repair is often preferred because it maintains your original tissue, which can better support heart function and reduce the need for lifelong blood-thinning medications.

Mitral Valve Replacement is necessary when the valve is too damaged to repair. In this procedure, the surgeon replaces the faulty valve with either a mechanical valve or a biological valve made from animal tissue. Mechanical valves last longer but require lifelong blood thinners, while biological valves might wear out over time but typically don’t require long-term medication.

Surgical Approaches

Both repair and replacement can be performed through open-heart surgery or minimally invasive techniques. Open-heart surgery involves a large incision and splitting the breastbone, leading to a longer recovery. Minimally invasive surgery uses smaller incisions, resulting in less pain and quicker recovery, though it’s not suitable for all patients.
