Lithotripsy

Lithotripsy is a non-surgical form of treatment for kidney stones as well as other stones present in different parts of the body such as the liver or gallbladder. The kidneys crystallize minerals and some other substances in urine giving rise to solid masses known as kidney stones. They can differ in size and feel from small sharp-pointed crystals to heavier polished rocks.

During lithotripsy, shock waves of high energy are directed externally towards the stones. The shock waves break them apart into much smaller particles that resemble sand so that they may easily pass out during urination through the urinary system. This process is particularly helpful when it comes to stones which are too huge to be gotten rid of naturally or have caused so much pain that nobody can tolerate.

Usually lithotripsy is done on an outpatient basis, without major surgery. Recovery is usually fast; with most patients going back to their daily activities after a few days. Nevertheless, you might have some discomfort, bruising or blood found in your urine following this procedure. Following your healthcare provider’s directions closely and keeping well hydrated to help flush out the stone fragments is essential. Ask your provider if lithotripsy is indeed the best choice considering the size, position and composition of your stones.
