Intrauterine insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination (IUI), commonly referred to as artificial insemination, is a method of inducing pregnancy in a couple. The procedure involves placing specially prepared sperm directly into the uterus, thus bypassing potential barriers and bringing the sperm closer to the egg for fertilization. Couples experiencing mild male infertility, unexplained infertility, or cervical mucus problems may find IUI particularly recommended; moreover, it can also be utilized in case of donor sperm necessity.

The process of IUI starts with a close monitoring of the ovulation cycle of the woman. In some cases, fertility medications may be used to stimulate the ovaries and increase the number of eggs released. When ovulation becomes imminent, the specimen is drawn and processed in a laboratory so that only healthy and motile sperm are concentrated. Afterward, through a thin and flexible catheter, this concentrated sperm is inserted into her uterus. The procedure usually lasts only few minutes, does not result in pain and is carried out at an outpatient clinic without anesthesia.

Nowadays, IUI has advanced significantly with the revolutionized precision provided by ultrasound in placement of sperm and also the use of sperm selection techniques that improves on the quality of such sperms.
