Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is in-vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure that can increase chances of conception in cases of male infertility. This procedure is commonly recommended when there are issues such as low sperm count, poor sperm motility or abnormal sperm shape that makes it hard for sperm to fertilize an egg naturally.

During ICSI, a single sperm is carefully selected and injected into a mature egg with the help of fine needle under a microscope. This direct approach bypasses many challenges to fertilization presented by conventional IVF. Once the egg has been fertilized, the resulting embryo is cultured for few days in laboratory before being transferred to the womb of the woman, where it may implant and grow into a successful pregnancy.

Semen selection improvements for ICSI are part of contemporary progress, e.g. the observation of moving sperm cell organelle morphology (MSOME) and time-lapse imaging in these embryos. Improving the efficacy of this procedure is aided by all these advancements.

If you’re thinking about ICSI for your fertility treatment, it’s important to have a discussion with your fertility specialist concerning its specific advantages, disadvantages and success rates. Knowing what it entails and what is current will enable you to come up with an informed decision on where you are going in your fertility journey
