Hydrocephalus
Hydrocephalus is a kind of disorder in which there is a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) inside the brain ventricles resulting to increased pressure on brain tissues. Some of the signs and symptoms that are associated with this condition include headache, difficulty in walking, balance problems as well as change in cognition. People of all ages can have hydrocephalus; however, it is more common among infants and older adults.
The main form through which hydrocephalus is treated is through operation with an aim restore and maintain normal levels of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. The most widely used type of surgery involves insertion of a shunt which drains excess fluid from the brain into another part of the body where it can be absorbed. Another option is through endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) whereby a small hole is created in one ventricle so that CSF may easily flow out.
Although fluid buildup can be managed through surgery other curative measures such as physical therapy for motor function as well as cognitive therapy aimed at memory impairments may be necessary depending on symptoms exhibited by patients.
In case you are considering surgery for hydrocephalus then your physician will come up with several options on what might suit you best depending on their perceived advantages and ill effects hence enabling you make up your mind wisely.
