Gynecomastia Treatment

Gynecomastia is a condition that involves an increase in breast gland tissue in boys or men, due to the imbalance of estrogen and testosterone hormones. It affects either one breast or both breasts at times causing their development not to be uniform. Furthermore, gynecomastia is common particularly during puberty and later stages of life when there are hormonal transitions, drug use or some underlying illnesses.

In contrast, pseudogynecomastia occurs when there is an accumulation of excess fat in the chest area without any development of glandular tissues. This is a condition mostly resulting from weight gain, leading to enlarged breasts appearance but not accounting for any hormonal imbalance.

For those suffering from gynecomastia, it can cause physical discomfort and emotional distress. Surgical treatment usually referred to as male breast reduction entails removal of excess glandular tissue (from) breasts or chest area amounting to fat (and in some cases) skin so that a man’s chest becomes flat and masculine. If large amounts of fat are present, liposuction may also be performed.

If you have concerns regarding gynecomastia, it is advisable that you contact a qualified surgeon who can evaluate your condition and talk with you about the best surgical options available. An understanding of what causes breast enlargement along with advantages and disadvantages associated with them will enable one to make informed decisions about their treatment.
