Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a chronic condition where tissue like that found in the endometrium, which is the inner lining of the uterus, developed outside of the uterus. This abnormal tissue growth usually affects the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the pelvic lining with rare cases occurring outside these organs.
The endometrial-like tissues located outside the uterus also thicken, break down and bleed off at each menstrual cycle similar to how regular uterine lining does. However, since these tissues are not located inside of the uterus there is no way for them to exit out from one’s body. This can cause painful cyst formation called endometriomas in addition to inflammation, scarring, and adhesions – bands of fibrous tissue that can cause pelvic organs to stick together.
The symptoms of endometriosis can vary widely, ranging from severe menstrual cramps, chronic pelvic pain, pain during intercourse to infertility. Generally, severity of symptoms depends on how much tissue is growing rather than how much you have overall. If you’re considering treatment options for endometriosis such as medications for pain management, hormone therapy that will slow down the development of such tissues or surgery which will eliminate them altogether; talk with your doctor first about an ideal course of action based on your symptoms, fertility desires and general well-being.
