Cochlear Implant
It’s basically, an advanced electronic device used to enhance hearing in people suffering from severe hearing loss caused by the inner ear damage. A cochlear implant though, on the other hand, uses an artificial device that bypasses the damaged areas of the ear and sends sound signals directly to the brain.
Generally, there are two main components of a cochlear implant: an external processor worn behind the ear and an internal implant surgically placed beneath the skin. Sound is captured by the external processor and converted into digital signals which are then transmitted to the internal one. These signals are thus turned into electrical impulses that stimulate the cochlear nerve enabling any sound perception by that person.
People with significant hair cells loss in their cochleae have been known to benefit very little or not at all from conventional hearing aids hence this procedure is usually recommended. In this case, the cochlear nerve remains functional making it possible for such individuals to regain their sense of hearing.
Cochlear implants can dramatically enhance the ability to hear and comprehend speech, particularly in noisy surroundings. If you are thinking about this procedure, it’s essential to talk to an audiologist or an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist in order to find out whether a cochlear implant is right for your individual hearing requirements and to discuss possible results and rehabilitation procedures.
