Cervical Cancer Treatment
Cervical cancer originates in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. One of the primary causes of cervical cancer is infection with certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus transmitted through sexual contact.
In most cases, the body’s immune system successfully fights off HPV before it can cause any harm. However, in some individuals, the virus can persist for years, gradually causing changes in the cervical cells. Over time, these changes can lead to the development of cancerous cells.
Early detection of cervical cancer is critical for successful treatment. Regular screenings, such as Pap smears and HPV tests, can detect precancerous changes in the cervix, allowing for early intervention before cancer develops. Vaccination against HPV is another powerful tool in preventing cervical cancer, particularly when administered before exposure to the virus.
For those diagnosed with cervical cancer, treatment options depend on the stage of the disease and may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these. The prognosis is generally better when the cancer is detected and treated early.
