Bone Marrow Transplant
A procedure that involves replacing damaged or ineffective bone marrow with healthy blood-forming stem cells is called a bone marrow transplant (BMT). Healthy bone marrow stem cells help facilitate the production of various blood components such as red cells that carry oxygen and white cells that defend against foreign organisms. Apart from this, they also produce platelets which are necessary in clotting of blood.
If your bone marrow can no longer produce enough healthy blood cells as a result of conditions like leukemia, lymphoma or severe aplastic anemia, then you might require this transplant. There are two main types of BMTs; autologous ones where the stem cells originate from your own body and allogenic ones where they are sourced from another individual usually a close relative or a matched unrelated donor.
Restoration of production capacity for normal blood cells in the body and chances for recovery are among the major goals of BMTs. In some cases, such intensive procedures may involve undergoing chemotherapy or radiation targeting the affected area before undergoing transplantation but it could potentially cure or lead to long-term remission of several serious hematopoietic disorders. Your healthcare team will assess your situation and take you through the stages so as to determine whether this method is right for you.
