Bentall Procedure
Bentall procedure is a type of open-heart surgery performed to replace the aortic valve and the aortic root, and sometimes a portion of the ascending aorta. This procedure is usually recommended when these parts of the heart become damaged due to conditions like aortic aneurysm, aortic valve disease, or Marfan syndrome.
The aorta is the large blood vessel that carries oxygen-rich blood from your heart to the rest of your body. At the point where the aorta connects to your heart, the aortic valve ensures that blood flows out of the heart and prevents it from flowing backward into the heart’s left ventricle. When the aortic valve or aortic root becomes diseased or weakened, it can lead to serious health issues, such as heart failure or a life-threatening rupture of the aorta.
During the Bentall procedure, your surgeon will replace the damaged aortic valve and aortic root with a synthetic graft. This graft includes a new aortic valve, which can be either a mechanical valve (made from durable materials) or a biological valve (made from animal or human tissue). The surgeon may also replace the ascending aorta if it is also affected.
The Bentall procedure is a complex surgery, but it is often necessary to prevent the progression of aortic disease and improve your heart’s function. While the thought of open-heart surgery can be intimidating, this procedure is life-saving and can significantly reduce your risk of complications like aortic rupture or heart failure.
