Automatic Internal Cardiac Defibrillator
An Automatic Internal Cardiac Defibrillator (AICD), also known as an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD), is a medical device designed to monitor heart rhythms and deliver electric shocks when it detects potentially life-threatening arrhythmias, such as ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia. It is implanted under the skin, usually near the collarbone, and is connected to the heart through leads or wires.
Key functions of an AICD include:
- Monitoring Heart Rhythms: It continuously monitors the heart’s electrical activity.
- Defibrillation: When abnormal heart rhythms are detected, the AICD delivers an electric shock to restore normal heart rhythm.
- Pacing: If the heart beats too slowly, the AICD can also act as a pacemaker, providing electrical impulses to maintain a regular heart rate.
AICDs are commonly used in patients with a history of serious heart rhythm disorders, those at high risk of sudden cardiac arrest, or those who have survived a previous cardiac arrest. These devices help prevent sudden cardiac death by intervening when dangerous heart rhythms occur.
