Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) or Heart Bypass Surgery

Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) is a procedure designed to improve blood flow to your heart when one or more of the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle become blocked or narrowed. This surgery is often recommended if you have severe coronary artery disease, which can lead to chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, or even a heart attack.

During the surgery, your surgeon will create a new pathway, or “bypass,” for blood to flow around the blocked or narrowed artery. To do this, they will take a healthy blood vessel from another part of your body, usually from your chest (the internal mammary artery) or your leg (the saphenous vein). This vessel is then attached to the coronary artery, just below the site of the blockage. The new pathway allows blood to bypass the blockage and flow more freely to the heart muscle, ensuring it gets the oxygen-rich blood it needs to function properly.

Coronary artery bypass surgery is a major procedure, but it has a long track record of success in relieving symptoms, improving heart function, and increasing life expectancy. It’s especially beneficial for patients with multiple blocked arteries or those who haven’t responded well to other treatments like medications or stenting.

After the surgery, you’ll spend some time in the hospital to recover, and your healthcare team will monitor your progress closely. The recovery period can vary, but most patients can gradually return to their normal activities within a few weeks. Your doctor will give you specific instructions on how to care for yourself during this time, including advice on diet, exercise, and medications.
