TAVI Procedure

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) is a revolutionary procedure for treating severe aortic stenosis, a condition where the aortic valve narrows, restricting blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body. If you’re considering TAVR, understanding how it works and its benefits can help you make an informed decision.

What is TAVR?
TAVR, also known as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), is a minimally invasive procedure to replace a failing aortic valve. Unlike traditional open-heart surgery, which requires a large incision and opening of the chest, TAVR is performed through a small incision, usually in the groin, or sometimes in the chest or neck. A catheter is threaded through your blood vessels to reach the heart, and a new valve is guided into place within the diseased aortic valve.

Benefits of TAVR
TAVR offers several advantages over traditional valve replacement surgery. Because it’s minimally invasive, the procedure involves less trauma to your body, leading to a faster recovery, shorter hospital stay, and less pain. Most patients can return to their normal activities much sooner compared to those who undergo open-heart surgery. Additionally, TAVR is often an option for patients who are considered high-risk for traditional surgery due to age or other health conditions.

How TAVR Works
During the procedure, your doctor will use imaging techniques to guide the catheter and position the new valve inside the old, narrowed valve. Once in place, the new valve expands, pushing the old valve’s leaflets aside and taking over its function, allowing blood to flow more freely from your heart to the rest of your body.
