Biopsy of Lung or Lymph Node
For you to know, a lymph node biopsy is a diagnostic procedure used to examine lymph nodes for signs of diseases such as infection, inflammation and cancer. On the other hand, lymph nodes are small, oval shaped structures which are a part of the lymphatic system in our body that helps us fight infections. The lymph nodes are dispersed throughout the body with significant groups in neck, armpits and groins as well as near certain internal organs like the stomach or lungs.
During a lymph node biopsy, a tiny sample of tissue is removed for analysis from one or more lymph nodes. There are various types of lymph node biopsy depending on its location and purpose. In this case, fine needle aspiration (FNA) or core needle biopsy involves inserting thin needle into the lymph node to get some tissues out of it. This method is less invasive and usually ultrasound or CT guided to be accurate enough. Sometimes however, open (surgical) biopsy might be needed where an incision would be made to take away all or part of it.
Image-guided biopsies, among other contemporary surgical methods have greatly enhanced both the accuracy and safety of lymph node biopsies. This information may also be helpful in identifying if any of these diseases are present: lymphoma, metastatic cancer or others related to the lymphatic system.
It is crucial that you have a conversation with your health care provider about lymph node biopsy if it is something you are contemplating. This will inform you on how this procedure will assist in diagnosing your ailment and how it fits into the overall scheme of things concerning your treatment options.
