Ovarian Cystectomy

An ovarian cystectomy is when a doctor removes cysts from the ovary surgically. Ovarian cysts are fluid filled bags that can form on or in the ovaries. Despite the fact that most ovarian cysts are innocent and self-resolving, some may persist or grow larger or be accompanied by symptoms such as pain, abdominal swelling and discomfort. Therefore, this is when your health care provider might suggest an ovarian cystectomy.

There are two primary types of ovarian cystectomy procedures:

1. Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy: This is a minimally invasive procedure where a surgeon makes small incisions in the abdomen. A thin instrument with a camera and light called laparoscope helps view reproductive organs during surgery. The surgeon uses smaller tools to delicately remove the cyst through these tiny holes made on patient’s skin. Laparoscopic surgery tends to have shorter recovery times and less scarring than open surgeries do/
2. Open Cystectomy (Laparotomy): So here, the doc proceeds to cut wide in the tummy so as to take out the cyst. The larger they are or when their cancerous potential is suspected, this approach is usually preferred. The healing period usually takes longer after an open cystectomy.
