hysterectomy

A hysterectomy is an operation to remove the uterus, the organ in which a fetus develops during pregnancy. Depending on the reason for doing a hysterectomy, it may also involve removal of cervix, ovaries and fallopian tubes.

Hysterectomies may be performed for several reasons such as uterine fibroids causing severe pain or bleeding, uterus prolapse (when the uterus slips into the vaginal tract), or cancers affecting uterus, cervix or ovaries. Additional conditions that may lead to hysterectomy include endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, adenomyosis (a condition where tissue grows within the wall of the uterus), irregular vaginal bleeding and very painful menstruation. One more indication can be gender affirmative surgery.

In respect of non-cancerous ailments hysterectomy is often viewed as a last resort when all other treatments have failed. Several techniques can be used to carry out this surgery: through the abdomen, vagina or through less invasive options like laparoscopy. Length of recovery varies by type of surgery but usually requires several weeks of rest time.
