Septoplasty

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure done to rectify a deviated septum; in this context, it is where the wall of bones and cartilages separating the two nostrils (the septum) has gone crooked or off-center. A crooked septum can restrict air flow hence it becomes hard to breathe one or both sides of nose; it also leads to excessive nose bleeding, frequent sinus infections or snoring.

Modern-day septoplasty techniques have evolved to provide better outcomes with less recovery time. The procedure usually takes place under either general anesthesia or local anesthesia where an incision is made within the nostril for accessing the septum. Then, the surgeon reshapes or removes parts of the cartilage and bone that are obstructing airflow. In some instances, a portion of septum may be repositioned as opposed to being excised in order to maintain maximum natural structure.

Recent advancements in this field include use of endoscopic guidance which allows greater precision during surgery without disturbing surrounding tender tissues. As a result, there is minimal swelling postoperatively bleeding is also reduced while recovery is quite fast too. Also, absorbable sutures and splints might be used thus no removal required after surgery.
