Laryngectomy
A larynx is removed completely or partially through a surgical procedure called laryngectomy. This kind of surgery is often performed on patients suffering from laryngeal cancer or larynx damage resulting from accidents or diseases. Though the life of the patient will never be the same again after undergoing this treatment, right support and rehabilitation can still enable them to live good lives.
Various modern surgical methods have been used in making sure laryngectomies are safer and efficient. If only part of the laryngeal region has been infected with diseases since its initial inception, we can do a partial laryngectomy whereby only a portion will be removed with remaining vocal function. In more serious conditions, total extirpation of the entire voice box is necessary thus total laryngectomy becomes inevitable. Additionally, new developments in robotic-assisted surgery and minimally invasive techniques have enhanced precision while shortening post-operative healing time.
Patients who undergo this operation need to learn how to breathe,speak and swallow anew. Thus, breathing occurs through stoma(s) that are an opening within necks connecting trachea directly. The speech rehabilitation could comprise of an electrolarynx, esophageal concentration or tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) with voice prosthesis enabling more natural sounding speeches.
