Adenoidectomy

Adenoidectomy is a type of surgery that involves removing the adenoids which are tissue lumps located at the back of the nasal passage above the roof of the mouth. Adenoids form part of the immune system and help combat infections by trapping harmful germs such as bacteria and viruses. Nevertheless, under some circumstances, they may become enlarged or chronically infected leading to breathing difficulties, recurrent ear infections or obstructive sleep issues.

An adenoidectomy may be recommended when enlarged adenoids lead to problems such as difficulty in breathing through the nose, persistent snoring or frequent ear infections that do not respond to other treatments. Moreover, even though this procedure is done mostly on children because they tend to shrink with time as one ages, it might also be necessary for adults.

The surgery is usually carried out using general anesthesia and is less invasive requiring a short recovery time. After surgery patients usually report improved breathing and sleep quality almost immediately. Consequently, if you are having any symptoms associated with swollen adenoids then having a discussion regarding the benefits and risks of doing an adenoidectomy will assist in deciding whether or not this operation would be appropriate.
